(Amazon Photo / / Rachael A. Jones) For hundreds of Amazon workers, blue is not just the color of their signature staff badges they use to work. It’s a political individuality. Since 2006, 90% of those Amazon worker political contributions went to Democratic-aligned committees and because 2004, six out of their top seven candidates for office that Amazon workers contributed to conducted as Democrats. That is according to a new report from GovPredict, a political data startup backed by Y Combinator. Based in Washington D.C., the company provides data and analysis for businesses, trade groups, advocates, and political organizers from the parties. The Amazon report will be the second in a series considering political contributions by employees of major businesses. The first report focused on Google’s parent, Alphabet. “The goal of the show is to explore the giving patterns of different businesses and their workers at a qualitative, methodologically sound, and impartial fashion,” said GovPredict CEO Emil Pitkin. By assessing public donation data from an assortment of resources, GovPredict paints a picture of where the many politically engaged Amazonians are placing their cash. Between 2004 and 2018, presidential candidate Hillary Clinton received $610,805 by Amazon workers, over any other candidate for office. (GovPredict Picture ) Amazon workers contributed less to President Donald Trump’s campaign. He received a joint $17,436 from 42 Amazon workers. GovPredict examined contributions to federal and state races, both big local elections, and 527 political influence associations. The governmental information startup made certain to cast a wide net when looking for donors by name. The data will be aggregated from Federal Election Commission records, local campaign contribution portals, and the IRS. For difficulty committees not explicitly connected to the Republican or Democratic parties, GovPredict independently labeled them based on each party’s campaign platform. A questionnaire for marriage equality in Washington state, as an example, was labeled Democratic. GovPredict excluded Amazon’s PAC from its position of their committees that increased the most from Amazon workers. The majority of the funds raised by the best two committees came directly from Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. With Honor Fund raised more money from Amazon workers than any other committee from only two members of the group. Bezos contributed $10 million to this committee in early September, while Amazon worldwide consumer CEO Jeff Wilke kicked in an additional $50,000. With Honor is a non-partisan team that works to select veterans to Congress. (GovPredict Picture ) After With Honor, Washington United for Marriage increased the most funds from Amazon workers with Bezos carrying the Majority of the load. In 2012, he and his wife MacKenzie Bezos contributed $2.5 million to the campaign, which sought to assassinate same-sex marriage in Washington state, prior to the Supreme Court did so nationally in 2015. That campaign raised a total amount of $2,559,513 from Amazon workers. Position third is that the Democratic National Committee with $209,061. Donation patterns change a little between Amazon workers residing in the corporation’s home state of Washington and those living in other areas of the country. In Washington, 92% of contributions went to Democrats and just 8% to Republicans. But out of Washington, 22 percent of donations went to Republicans while 78 percent were given to Democrats. Nonetheless, the vast majority of Amazon donors — that a full 96 percent — live in Washington.
